4 Tips on How to Apply Stoicism in Our Life as A Designer

Stoicism? What is it? How is it related to design?

SStoicism was founded in Athens by Zeno of Cyprus in the early 3rd century BC but was famously practiced by the likes of Epictetus, Seneca, and Marcus Aurelius. The philosophy asserts that virtue (such as wisdom), tolerance and control is happiness, and judgment should be based on behavior, rather than words. That we can control or rely on external events, only ourselves and our response.

The Stoic believes that everything around us operates in a web of cause and effects, resulting in the irrational structure of the universe which they called: LOGOS.

Rather than chasing and imagining the perfect and ideal society, Stoic tries to deal with the world as it is by pursuing self-improvement by pursuing 4 cardinal virtues which are — Wisdom, Temperance, Justice, and Courage. You can read about the virtue here.

The article will be based on the famous stoic writers, Marcus Aurelius. From the notes that he has written every day in his life which now a book called: Meditations

And this is our biggest question, can we apply Stoicism in our life as a designer?

The answer is, yes. And here’s some learning that I had from his book.
